This morning a friend sent me a link to a voyeur’s clip of someone playing harmonica in the stairwell of the CBC building in Vancouver. While the piece is frustratingly incomplete, I enjoy that it exists at all. You see, the majority of my time playing the harmonica has been spent ducking into stairwells, parking garages, storage rooms, abandoned buildings and any place where I can hide while my sound reverberates around me. One of my favorite things about playing the harp, actually, is the anonymity it provides. One moment you can be belting out a heartfelt blues number or an inspired symphonic piece and the next moment you can simply slip your harp back into your pocket and disappear into the pedestrian mix like you were never there. So I’m posting this clip as a salute to all you who play in the nooks and crannies of urbanity and provide a little bit of mystery for those non-players around you wondering where that awesome music is coming from.
If you know anything about this person playing in the stairwell of the CBC building in Vancouver, let me know! Or let them know and have them drop me a line. Their playing sounds interesting and I’d love to do a full post on them!
